Regarding the surname variant spelling of Fryer, Frier. Please remember that most of these people were illiterate, and the name was usually written by a clerk, who spelled phonetically.
There is also a William Fryer in this area at the same time. 1717. Chowan Deed Book B #1, Page 438, #970. Jonathan Sears of the Province of New York, marriner, to Robert Patterson and Edward Moore of Chowan Precinct. January 16, 1716/17 for a valuable consideration. 540 acres on the west side of the Meherrin River, joining William Fryer and lands now in the possession of said Patterson as by patent, all Houses, Gardens, Orchards, etc. Witnesses are J. Turner, Robert Hicks, John Nairn. Reg. April 20, 1717. (540 Acres on the west side of the Meherrin River, joining William Fryer and lands now in possession of Robert Patterson as by patent).[1]
Richard Fryer first appears in Bertie County when he purchases 240 acres of land from John and Dorcas Edwards on July 8, 1718. The land was adjoining Thomas Jones and Jno. Holbrook's land. Testators were Martin Gardner and Wm Jones. [2]
Of note, the same day, the Edwards sell another parcel of 320 acres to son-in-law James Roberts and wife Cordelia.
John Edwards, Jr. is power of attorney for his father acknowledging the land to both Fryer and Roberts.
Richard Fryer is named on a list of Freeholders living between Salmon Creek and Cashie River in Bertie County dated January 9, 1719[3]

Richard served on a jury of the inhabitants on the north side of Bare Swamp Creek and the west side of Rocquis Creek, which was tasked with laying out a new road from New Market, over the head of the Kesiah River, to Sandy Point and the mouth of Salmon Creek. [5] Several Edwards families are his neighbors also. There is also a David Henderson in the vicinity.
Richard Fryer was still living in 1735 when he is named as father-in law in the Craven County will of Owen O'Daniel.[6]
