Research of Uwe Kruse

  • Neill, Rev. Edward D. "History of Dakota County", "John J. Fox was one of many Germans who made a claim in Hampton township in March, 1855.Others mentioned were Conrad, Peter, and Nicholas Doffing (all natives of Luxembourg), Joseph Stumpf (A. Catharina's brother) and Nicholas Kranz (another Luxembourg). In October of that year, J. J. Fox filed his application at the Land Office in Red Wing. The Minnesota Territorial census of 1857, J. J. Fox's land was 160 acres located in Town 113 and Range 18.

In that year, the newly organized parish of St. Mary's agreed to swap 10 acres of J. J.'s standing wood acres for 30 acres of open land.Years later, the family moved into the same log shanty where the first mass was said and where they lived until 1864 when they built the stone house that his son Ferdinand, and then his daughter Mrs. Kieffer owned. August Langenfeld, a first cousin of J. J. Fox, and Nicholaus Fuchs his brother, both originally being from Langenfeld, Germany also emigrated and became part of this community. "

From the website of St Mary's Church, New Trier, Dakota Minnesota USA:

"Due to the initiative of the settlers they obtained a priest on a part-time basis after they deputed John J. Fuchs to visit Bishop Cretin in Saint Paul with their request. Father George Keller from the Order of Saint Benedict offered Mass in the Fox home in May 1856 and also baptized several children that day."

(Church Remodeling) ""As the men from the parish worked on the hall project, the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary was uncovered under the old stage area. This statue was donated by the John J. Fuchs family for the stone Church and had been put there for safekeeping and forgotten. After this statue was repainted, it received a prominent place in the hall until renovations in 1977 when it was put in the arch-window above the main entrance."
