Civil War, Captain, Company G 4th Regiment, Missouri, Cavalry enlisting Sep 1862

Sylvester was born the son of William Fugate from VA and Martha (Patsy) Nunn from VA. -- William was son of Francis Fugate born 1776 and Caledonia Bocock born 1777 at Pulaski Co. VA. Little to nothing is known about Martha Nunn. Sylvester's parents divorced before 1870, his father William remarried to Lucinda Wheeler they had three children and lived and died (1899) near Springfield, Missouri. Martha never remarried she lived with different children and is buried at Barton County, Missouri (1896).

Sylvester's first wife is unknown, her maiden name may have been Lucas: she birthed Jefferson Fugate b. 1859 at Du Quoin, Perry, Illinois and possibly they had a daughter Carrie. Jefferson Fugate lived and died at Eureka, Greenwood, Kansas.

Sylvester's second wife was W. A. Fugate, they were married 23 Jan 1867 at Franklin County, Illinois they had a daughter, Sarah b. abt 1869 at TN or MO they may have had another child.

Sylvester's third wife was Phinetta (Nettie) McCartney born abt 1852 at Missouri, they were married 3 Oct 1872 at Barry County Missouri and their children were: Andrew Jackson "Jack" born abt 1874 at Missouri, Mollie born 1876 at Missouri, Barbara born 1878 at Arkansas, Phoebe born 1881 at Arkansas, Addie (Adaline) born 1883 at Arkansas, Vess (Sylvester) born 1885 at Missouri, Mavis known as Pinky (female) born 1886 at Arkansas. Nettie died before 1895 and was buried at Protem, Missouri and later moved to Friend cemetery at Isabella, Missouri when the Bull Shoals Lake was built in 1950.

Three of Sylvester and Phinetta's daughters married three sons of Pleasant and Arbelle Hutchings; Barbara Fugate married Shelt Hutchings, Phoebe Fugate married James Bartlette Hutchings and Mavis known as Pinky married Charles Preston Hutchings. Adaline Fugate married a Hutchings cousin Charles Wesley Hutchings son of Hansel and Sarah Hutchings. Hansel and Pleasant Hutchings were brothers.

The fourth wife of Sylvester, was Talitha Jane Risley, they were married 29 Mar 1895, their children were: William McKinley (Mack) born 1896 at Missouri, Ruben born 1898 at Missouri, Velma born 1900 at Missouri, Elvis born abt 1903 at Missouri, Elva born 1904 at Missouri, Johnnie (female) born 1905 at Missouri, Claud born 1907 at Missouri, Jimmie B. (Jeff) born 1910 at Missouri, Opal Jo (Toni) born 1913 at Bristow, Creek, OK, Ova Vesta (Esther) born 1917, at Bristow, Creek, OK, Foy Mable born 1918 at Bristow, Creek, OK.

Sylvester served in the Civil War as a Captain in Company G 4th Regiment Missouri Cavalry enlisting in Sep 1862 his home post office was listed as Theodosia, Missouri at the time of his enlistment he was discharged sometime in 1863. He is listed one name away from his fourth wife's father, Silas Richard Risley.

Sylvester moved his family to Creek County Oklahoma by wagon in Aug 1910 when son Jimmy B, known as Jeff was 3 weeks old. Sylvester was a penny pincher but was considered a man of means. He told you once what to do or not to do. His word was good. He appeared to be of Indian descent and was unwanted in the town of Bristow, OK because he looked Indian, The local folks had asked him to move on, they did not want his kind in Bristow ...but he stayed and he along with a large number of his family are buried at Bristow City Cemetery
