Biography

Richard Fuller was an English banker and politician, born about 1713 as the third surviving son of Thomas Fuller, a landowner at FitzHarris outside Abingdon, and his wife Hester Aldworth.

In 1737, in partnership with Frazer Honywood, he founded a bank in the City of London, now part of the Royal Bank of Scotland. He inherited FitzHarris from his father and, as a landowner, was chosen High Sheriff of Berkshire in 1754. Entering politics in 1764, he was elected unopposed as a Member of Parliament, sitting first for Steyning and then from 1768 to 1774 for Stockbridge.

In 1762 he married Susanna Barnard,[1] and in 1768 they moved to Dorking.[2] They had ten children: Richard, Thomas, Susannah, George, Joseph, William, Elizabeth, Maria, Charles, and Harriet.[3]

He died in 1782 and was buried at Dorking.[4][5][6] His memorial reads: "To the Memory of Richard Fuller esq of the Rookery in this County who departed this life January 2nd 1782 aged sixty nine years Susannah Fuller wife of Richard Fuller esq who died April 11th 1789 aged fifty four years"

Support for religious and charitable causes

Richard was listed as a supporter of the Society for Promoting Religious Knowledge among the poor in the 1763 report which the charity published. The report recorded him as Richard Fuller M.P. and that he had been a supporter since 1762.

Richard was listed in the Orphan Working School, Hoxton's "Plan" published in1769, and was shown as Governor for Life , on page 28.
