Biography

Descendant

Matthew was probably born in early 1719, possibly in Barnstable or Sandwich, Massachusetts. He was the son of Jonathan Fuller and Rebecca Perry.

About 1738, in Colchester, Connecticut, when Matthew was 19, he married Bathsheba Roberts, daughter of Mark Roberts. The marriage date and place is based on the birth and death of their first child, (most likely named Matthew) who sadly passed away 20 May 1739, aged about 9 months, in Colchester.

Land transfer documents suggest the couple moved from Colchester in about 1747 to Sharon, Connecticut, and then to Salisbury, Connecticut about 1749.

Matthew died young, at about age 33 in or near Salisbury, Connecticut. His last child was born in 1750 and his estate was probated 16 Jan 1753, so he probably passed away in late 1752 or early 1753. His will mentioned the following children and their ages. Nathaniel aged 13, Ezekiel 9, Dimis 7, Benjamin 5, and Mehitabel 2. [1] [2]

Research Notes

A comprehensive look at records relating to Matthew Fuller and Bathsheba Roberts was published in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register in 2012. (See sources) In 2006, Matthews name was removed from his likely father’s genealogical line, because he was not mentioned in his fathers will. The article maintains that he 1) moved away from his home area, and was possibly given his share of the inheritance at that time, and 2) died before his father, both circumstances being possible explanations for his absence from the will. In addition, his widow Bathsheba, remarried before his father‘s death, quite likely ensuring his children’s future.

The researcher found many records in his search that indicated Matthew Fuller (1719-1753) WAS the child of Jonathan Fuller (1696-1768) as early genealogical records indicated, and that his wife was Bathsheba Roberts, daughter of Mark.
