Biography

Hannah was a Friend (Quaker)

Hannah Fuller was a Quaker. She was born in 1669, the daugther of Abraham Fuller of the King's County. [1] She married Joseph Maddock, a linen draper, in a Quaker ceremony in Dublin in 1692 [2] and had a large family. He died in 1715 leaving her with several young children.

Hannah appears to have been particularly concerned to secure marriages for her daughters, each of whom had been left a £450 marriage portion in her husband's will. The eldest Hannah (Maddock) Nixon (1696-1723), who was nineteen, married Jacob Nixon in a Quaker ceremony four month's after Joseph Maddock died. A month later, the Quaker meeting heard that Elizabeth (Maddock) Roberts (1700-), then only fifteen, had married Robert Roberts, who was not a Quaker, and decided to make enquiries of her mother, Hannah senior. Ten months after that, Hannah entered into a marriage settlement for her next daughter, Amy, who was only 13. (The final daughter, Sarah, married Richard Nunn in 1722 when she was 15.) Her son Joseph Maddock (1694-) also 'married out' from Quakers in 1718.

This activity plainly concerned the Quakers, who recorded a minute

Friends being Grieved by the unfaithfulness of Hannah Maddock, by encouraging her children in a Wrong Liberty, contrary to Truth, both in marriage and education, its desired that something may be considered at next meeting for clearing Truth of her miscarriage and deceit, she continuing to come to our meetings for worship.[3]

The following meeting resolved to tell her to amend her ways and condemn her own behaviour failing which she would be disowned. [4] She then disappears from the Quaker record.

After her husband's death, Hannah entered into a large number of property and other financial transactions including those related to her children's marriages. For example, in 1717 she entered into a settlement for the marriage of her daughter Amy and Henry the son and heir of Cadwallader and Margaret Edwards of Ballyhire, Wexford. [5] In this deed, she committed to pay a marriage portion of £1,000 for Amy's marriage, despite her husband only having provided £450 in his will.

Plainly she didn't have the money, because in 1726 she entered into two deeds in relation to the same marriage settlement. A complicated deed with five parties mentioned the £1000 marriage portion of Amy Maddock, viz £450 devised to her by her father’s will and paid by his executors and £550 paid by her mother Hannah Maddock before the date of the deed. In return for this her daughter's parents-in-law transferred a large part of their property to trustees, income going to themselves during their lives and then to their son and daughter-in-law. This property included not only Cadwallader Edwards' inheritance of lands in Wexford (as envisaged in the original marriage settlement) but also Margaret Edwards nee Arthur's inheritance of houses in the town of Wexford. [6] The second of the deeds explained where the extra £550 had come from. [7] Amy's mother-in-law Margaret Edwards nee Arthur had mortgaged her inheritance to provide more than half of Amy's dowry.

The 1722 marriage of her daughter Sarah to Richard Nunn also saw her scrabbling about for money. The marriage settlement showed Sarah's total marriage portion at £600, £450 coming from her father's will, £35 from Sarah's uncle Joshabeth Maddock (1681-1717) to be paid on the death of his mother Ammiel (UNKNOWN) Maddock (abt.1647-1731) and £115 contributed by Hannah herself. [8]

Hannah Maddock left a will dated December 1731 and proved in April 1732, an abstract of which mentions her son [in-law] John Roberts, her sons Joseph, Abraham, Jacob, Isaac and James Maddock, her daughters Elizabeth Roberts, Amy Phillips and Sarah Nunn, grandchildren Hannah Nunn, Mary Nixon and Cadwallader Paul Edwards and Margaret Edwards, grandmother of Cadwallader Paul.
