Biography

Frank is the 6th great grandson of Robert Royce, an ancestor of President Millard Fillmore, Franks fifth cousin twice removed.

Frank, the son of Armintus Fuller and Arminta Brough, was born on December 8, 1861 in Centerville, Appanoose County, Iowa.[1] Frank's father was a carpenter who in 1870 owned $100 in both real estate and personal property. His mother kept house for a family with ten children.[2]

By 1880, four of Frank's siblings, William M., Clara Ann Elizabeth, Elnora R, and Solomon A, "Saul", had married and were no longer residing in their father's household. Three of the four had already had children of their own. Frank was now the oldest child living with his parents and five younger siblings, May R., Jessie, Thomas, Jennie and Edward. Their address was 161 Main Street, Centerville, Iowa. Frank was working in a cigar store and his father was a house carpenter. Frank's mother and his maternal grandparents were born in Virginia and his father and grandfather were both born in New York, his paternal grandmother was born in Vermont.[3]

Frank married Martha Jennie Delay aka "MJ" in March 1881. They had six children:[1]

  1. George F. lived in Iowa all his life and had six children by his wife Sarah Mitchell.
  2. Zelma Edna Fuller McElroy preferred to be called by her middle name, Edna. Appanoose County was the only record place of residence for her. Edna married A. J. McElroy in 1901 and together they had 2 children. Their son died as an infant and their daughter married Kenneth Johns.
  3. Charles Jesse married twice, first in Oklahoma to Mae Archer who had two children who both passed away the day of their birth. His second marriage was in Appanoose county, Iowa to Elma Maude Minks together, according to the records found, they had two daughters.
  4. Clyde Thomas spent his early years in Appanoose county, Iowa where he married his first wife, Ruth Summers. Together they had a son. This union ended in divorce: Ruth married Ross Townsend and moved to California. Clyde moved to Illinois where he filed for divorce on grounds of desertion and was granted custody of his son. He married his second wife, Ruby E Peterson and they had four children: two died young living only a few days. Clyde was a barber, justice of the peace, Police Magistrate and active in the Fraternal Order of Eagles (FOE). He served as chaplain for the East Moline aerie and as state chaplain as well.
  5. Mary Cordelia Fuller Orman Cordie, as she liked to be called, lived most of her life between Iowa and Illinois. She married Rev Elzie L Orman and together they had three daughters. Her family took in Cordie's brother, Clyde, and nephew, Mel, while they were going through the period after Ruth had left them.
  6. Anna Viola Fuller Davis (1900-1983) married Paul E Davis. Together they had one daughter, Jeanne, the only child listed on the 1940 US Census.

In 1895 Frank was employed as a laborer and his religious belief was Holiness. He lived in Centerville, Iowa with his wife and 4 children.[4]

By 1900 Frank was a barber and owned his home in Centerville, Iowa with a mortgage. His oldest son, George, was also a barber. His wife, MJ, had 5 children living out of 6. However, Mary Cordelia was not born yet. She may have had a total of 7 children with one having died before 1900.[5]

Frank lived most of his life in Centerville, Iowa except, as stated in his father's obituary as shown in Find A Grave: Memorial #14428649: For the 14 months that he resided in Chickasaw Nation, Oklahoma. Since his father's passing was during November of 1907, his Oklahoma residency occurred after September of 1906 but before January of 1909. Find A Grave: Memorial #28744030 reveals that his wife, Martha Jennie (Delay) Fuller (1860-1950), traveled to Oklahoma also. Historical Note: It was during this period that the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma was the first college created by Oklahoma’s first Legislature. My research did not discover why Frank was in Chicasaw for 14 months..

In 1910 Frank's address was listed as 608 South 18th Street in Centerville, Iowa. He was a barber in his own shop and he had paid off the mortgage on his home.[6]

Frank was still working as a barber on his own account in 1920[7] and would continue working in his own shop until his death in 1923. One Monday Frank had a light stroke and took to his bed. He died the next Saturday, October 13, 1923 at 4 am, with all his children at his bedside. The Centerville Daily Iowegian dated October 13, 1923 wrote:

His relatives today stated that they had never heard him speak an oath or an unclean word and in his death Mr. Fuller was patient and unmindful of himself to the last.

Funeral services were held at the Free Methadist church the following Monday with Rev. H. R. Eveland, assisted by Rev. C. Ward Milan, officiated. Frank was buried in Oakland Cemetery on October 15, 1923.[1]
