Biography

1629 Birth and Parents

Name: Samuel Fuller^[1].^[2][3]

Birth: about 1628/1629 at Scituate, Plymouth, Massachusetts, ^[4][3] His year of birth is given as 1624 by other sources.^[5]In May, 1627 there was an event in Plymouth Colony know as the "Division of Cattle". It served as a census of the colony. Samuel was born after this event.

Samuel Fuller, son of Samuel was born a bout 1629.^[6]

Samuel, son of Samuel Fuller, Sr, and his wife Bridget Lee, was born about 1629. ^[7]

Rev. Samuel fuller was born in 1625 in Plymouth, Massachusetts. He was the son of Samuel Fuller, born before 20 January 1580 and died between 9 August 1633 and 26 September 1633 in Plymouth, Massachusetts; his mother was Bridget Lee, who died after 1633. His parents were married 27 May 1617 in Leiden, Netherlands.^[8]

1654 Liaison with Ruth Bassett

At the General Court at Plymouth on 6 Jun 1655, John2 Sprague, son of Francis, and Ruth Bassett, daughter of William, of Duxbury were "present[ed] for fornication before they were married..." indicating that the infant John was born less than 9 months after the wedding. ^[9]

Ruth Bassett was born about 1633 in Bridgewater, Plymouth, Massachusetts and died between 22 March 1692/93 and 1 January 1699/00. ^[8]

This alone would be genealogically unremarkable, but comparison of the Y-DNA of descendants of eldest son John3 to younger sons Samuel and William and other Sprague children show John3 was not John2 Sprague's biological child. These descendants match the Y-DNA haplogroup of the Fullers of Plymouth. Only Samuel2 Fuller (Samuel1), born 1625, Plymouth Colony, died 17 August 1695, Middleboro, Plymouth County, was living near Duxbury. ^[9]

Documents will likely never answer whether John2 Sprague knew that he was not the biological father of his wife's first child.

First Marriage, Name Unknown

Rev. Samuel Fuller married twice. The name of his first wife was unknown. She was the mother of his first child Samuel and possibly of his second child Elizabeth.

His first wife's name is unknown. ^[7]

Wikipedia gives her name as Susanna.^[6]

One of the genealogy books on the descendants of Dr. Samuel Fuller list is wife as Elizabeth Brewster. Don't know how factual this is.^[10]

1663 Second Marriage to Elizabeth

He married second between 11 April 1663 and 2 May 1667 Elizabeth (Nichols) Bowen, daughter of John Nichols and widow of Thomas Bowen. ^[7]

His second wife was a widow when he married her, Elizabeth Nichols Bowen. The Fullers then had five more children: John, Experience, Hannah, Mercy, and Isaac.

Samuel Fuller married second, between April 11, 1663 and May 2, 1667, Elizabeth (Nicholas) Bowen. They had seven children. ^[6]

Occupation

His title was "Reverend" ^[11] He was the first minister of the First church in Middleboro, Massachusetts.^[12]

1695 Death

Death: Age at Death: 71 This would make him born before the cattle division. He is not listed there.^[3]

Date: 17 AUG 1695 (gravestone) or 24 Aug 1695 (Church record). The Church record reads "Mr. Samuel Fuller, the Teacher of the chh at Midlebury a sincere Godly man whom wee had the last yeare dismissed to that service, dyed August 24 being about 66 yeares old a great losse to that place."^[3]

Burial Place: Nemasket Hill Cemetery, Middleboro, Plymouth County, Massachusetts,^[3][15] The stone is not his original stone. From the Church's records, the inscription on his original stone reads:

"Here lyes buried ye body of ye Rev. Samuel Fuller, who departed this life Aug. ye 17th, 1694, in ye 71st year of his age. He was ye 1st minister of ye Church of Christ of Middleborough."

Rev. Samuel Fuller died 17 August 1695 in Middleboro, Plymouth, Massachuetts. ^[8]

Some genealogies present his wife Elizabeth as Elizabeth Brewster, daughter of William. There is no evidence that William Brewster actually had a daughter Elizabeth.

About 1665 he married Elizabeth Brewster, born about 1637 and died 11 November 1713 ^[8]
