Biography

This profile is part of the Fuller Name Study.

Mary was born in 1821[1] in St Pancras, London, England.[2]

She married John PONTON, a bootmaker from Northampton, in 1840 in St Pancras.[3]

By the time of the 1851 census, Mary was using her maiden name. She was working as a laundry maid at Bedgebury House in Goudhurst, Kent, England, the home of Viscount Beresford.[4]

In 1854 Mary married Eugène Dominique THIOU in Marylebone, London.[5] The marriage was bigamous, as Mary's first husband was still alive[6][7] and had himself remarried in 1850.[8]

Eugène was a cook in the Royal Household at the time of the 1861 census, working at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight, England.[9] By 1871 he had become "master cook" and was working at Windsor Castle, Berkshire, England.[10] Mary was at St James Palace in London.[11]

Mary died in 1874[12] and was buried in London.[13]
