Biography

The birth and death dates for Paul Silas are from his death certificate. The death certificate states he died in the Columbia Hospital in Columbia, SC. The certificate has his wife name as Susanna Bowers; his father as Frederick Fulmer; and his mother as Sara Ann Fulmer. The family data for the death certificate was provided by L. K. Fulmer, who would be Paul Silas' son Lonnie.

He appears in the census records from 1860 to 1940.

On July 13, 1883, there is a deed action in which Paul's mother, Sara Ann Catherine Fulmer, transferred 349.5 acres to Paul for a sum of $2000. The land was on Bear Creek. At some point, Paul moved his family close to Chapin and later built a home in Chapin in order for his children to attend school.

On 4 December 1930, Paul sold 228 acres on Bear Creek to his son Lonnie K. Fulmer.

Paul and his wife were both very active in their church and other social activities.

Paul and Susannah had 13 children: Murray, Asby, Cora, Wilbur, Maybelle, Seber, Irene, Marie, Lonnie, Pearl, Toye, Birdie and Adelaide.

He is buried in Mount Horeb Church Cemetery, Chapin, SC.

The following are notes from Muriel Harmon Lake, his granddaughter, entitled "Memories of Paul and Susannah Fulmer": Six of his brothers and sisters died as young children from diphtheria. They are all buried at the John Frederick Fulmer Cemetery. (Directions to cemetery: At Chapin, take St. Peter's Church Road at Hardee's. Turn left onto Dreher Island Road. Turn left onto R.B. Baker Road. Bear right onto Resting Point Place - a dirt road. Dead end at gate. Climb over fence and follow old road bed around lake. Cut back to right to cemetery. It's about a 1/4 mile walk.)

Paul and Susannah first lived on a farm on Bear Creek about 200+ acres which Paul paid $2000 when his mother deeded the land over to him (from Sara Ann Catherine Fulmer). Two of the children were born at that place. Then he bought a farm because he needed more room. They bought a house about two or three miles from Chapin on what is now called Paul Fulmer Road. The eleven remaining children were born there.

They were members of St. Peter's Lutheran Church and Grandpa was superintendent of Sunday School. They moved into Chapin later where they built an eight room home right on the corner of Columbia Avenue here in 1908 so his children could attend the best schools. They became members of Mt. Horeb Lutheran Church.

From Volmar July 18, 1588:

"Paul Fulmer's Father was John Frederick Fulmer, son of Adam Fulmer and Mary Ann Catherine Reister and his Mother was was Sarah Ann Catherine Fulmer, daughter of John Fulmer and Elizabeth Wessinger. He was born December 22, 1856. On September 14, 1876, Paul and Susannah were married, most likely at St. Peters Pineywoods Church since they were both members there.

On July 13, 1883 a deed was recorded in the Lexington County Records, Book DD, Page 383 showing the transfer of 349 1/2 acres of land lying on Bear Creek from Sarah Ann Catherine Fulmer to Paul S. Fulmer for the sum of $2000.00. We do not know, nor have we researched, but sometime after the birth of Asby and Cora, Paul moved the family to the Linder Farm on Paul Fulmer Road. Ten more children were born on this farm and in 1908, Paul built a home in Chapin, S.C. and moved there so the children could attend school.

In 1922 Paul, Susannah, Birdie, and Adelaide transferred their membership from St. Peters Church to Mt. Horeb Church in Chapin. On December 4, 1930 a deed was recorded in the County of Lexington showing the sale of 228 acres lying on Bear Creek, Book 4N, Page 399, to Lonnie K. Fulmer for $2300.00.

For many years Paul was an official of St. Peters Lutheran Church and Superintendent of the Sunday School. He served as trustee of the school in Chapin and always worked for religious and educational development of the community. He was a prosperous and retired farmer and lived in Chapin until his death June 9, 1945. He had two brothers and one sister. He is buried in the Mt. Horeb Church Cemetery beside his wife."
