Biography

Taken from the obituary of Annie Fuqua Boyd (our great grandmother) in the Baton Rouge newspaper in May, 1931

"Mrs. Boyd, formerly Miss Annie Fuqua of this city, was a member of one of Louisiana’s oldest and most distinguished families, that had come to this state from the Atlantic seaboard. She was the daughter of James Overton Fuqua and Jeanette Foules Fuqua. Her father was an eminent citizen of Louisiana’s earlier days, and a veteran of both the Mexican and the Civil Wars. . .

Mrs. Boyd was born in Clinton, in East Feliciana Parish, but had lived in Baton Rouge virtually all of her life, and was educated here. As a young girl of great beauty she was much admired and was one of the acknowledged belles of this portion of Louisiana. In 1882, or almost 50 years ago, she was married to Thomas Duckett Boyd, while the latter was professor of English at Louisiana State University. Later for several years they made their home Natchitoches, during the period that Colonel Boyd was President of the Louisiana State Normal College. They returned to Baton Rouge in 1896 when Colonel Boyd became President of LSU and have resided in their home on the old campus during the 31 years that Col. Boyd was the active President of the institution and during the several years that he served as President Emeritus.

Mrs. Boyd was a real helpmeet to her husband and their married life was marked by much happiness as well as by occasional sorrows. . .

Devoted to her family, Mrs. Boyd found her fullest measure of happiness in her home and she was devotedly loved and cherished by her husband and children. A host of warm friends throughout the city and state sorrows with them today in their great bereavement."
