Thomas Furlong, son of John Furlong of and Mary (Fitzgerald or McCormick) Furlong, was born in 22 Feb. 1844 at Jamestown, Chautauqua County, New York, USA.[1][2][3][4]
He began military service on 18 April 1861 at Benizette, Elk County, Pennsylvania in Company G., First Pennsylvania Rifle Reserve Volunteer Corps better known as the "Bucktails." He was discharged, May 28, 1864.[3] He was detailed to the first secret service and spent much of his time in the Confederate lines.[1]
He married Elizabeth Florence Hagerty on 4 Oct. 1864 at Franklin, Pennsylvania.[3][4]
He was the first police chief at Oil City, Pennsylvania.[3] In 1880 he moved to St. Louis and organized the Furlong Secret Service Company, at the same time working as special agent for the Missouri Pacific Railroad, St. Louis, Missouri.[3] He was a private detective when he and Elizabeth appeared on the census of 5 June 1900 at 2723 Walnut St., St. Louis, St. Louis City, Missouri.[4] He was a manager in an office when he and Elizabeth appeared on the census of 22 April 1910 at Saint Louis, Saint Louis City, Missouri.[5]
Thomas died 6 Jan. 1918 at St. Louis, Missouri and was buried at Hillcrest Abbey Crematory and Mausoleum, Saint Louis, Missouri. His memorial has a biography.[2]
