Biography

Charles Newman Furlong was born about 1822[1]. Charles Furlong ...

He was the son of William Furlong and Ellen Alice Wise.

A Charles Furlong age 19 [from Castletown Cork], arrived as an unmarried male Immigrant on board the Comet, arriving on the 8th August 1841. Occupation Carpenter, could read and write. Parents William and Ellen.[Assisted Immigration and passenger lists 1828-1896], Ancestry .com.au. Ellen arrived on the same boat, as an unmarried female, and "under the protection of her brother".

Also Charles had two sisters Ellen and Mary Ann. Mary Ann married a Frederick Berckleman. Frederick arrived on board the Isabella in 1840 as a married male immigrant. No mention of the arrival of Mary Ann, however she is said to have died at Newtown, Sydney in 1851.

His brother was William Furlong, a member of Parliament in 1854.

General suggestion is that the Furlongs came from Wexford. Possibly had a spinning mill near (Cork-Waterford)

Charles Newman Furlong married Annie Maria Milton 6 October 1845 at Scots Church, Pitt Street, Presbyterian, Sydney, NSW Australia.

They have ten children.

Charles Newman Furlong was a Flour Miller and owner of Anchor Flour Mills.

He Lived at Chester Lodge, Parramatta Road, Glebe. In 1863 at a Lodging House 18 Fort Street, Sydney. In 1864 at 97 Princess Street. In 1869 at 19 North Campbell Street. In 1873 at 6 Norton Street, Little Redfern.

In the Insolvent Estate of Charles Newman Furlong and William Kennedy, trading together under the name, style, and firm of "Furlong and Kennedy," of Bathurst-street, Sydney, millers. WHEREAS the Estate of Charles Newman Furlong and William Kennedy was, on the 18th day of August, 1860, placed under sequestration by order of the Honorable Edward Wise, one of the Judges of the Supreme Court, I hereby appoint a First Meeting of the Creditors of the said Insolvents to be holden before me, at my Office, Supreme Court House, King-street, Sydney, on Thursday, the 23rd day of August instant, to commence at 11 a.m., for the proof of debts against the said Estate; and a .Second Meeting to be holden before me, at the same -place, on Tuesday, the 28th day of August instant, to commence at 11 a.m., for the further proof of debts, and for the election of a Creditors' Assignee, if required. —Dated at Sydney, the 20th day of August, a.d. 1860. WILLIAM ALEXANDER PTJREFOY, Chief Commissioner of Insolvent Estates. Official Assignee—John Morris. 2487 ~ 6s.


Charles Newman Furlong passed away 15 June 1876, aged 53 years, at Moreton Street, Surry Hills.

He was buried 17 June 1876 Camperdown Cemetery, Newtown, City of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. PLOT Burial number BN16918
