Biography

Thomas Furlong's birth was recorded in the Furlong Family Bible. See Furlong-438 for transcription.

Thomas was baptized at the Mingo Presbyterian Church in Finleyville on 3 October 1880. Thomas was working as a coal miner and living with his mother in the 1900 census, along with brothers Edward, John, George and Frederick. In 1901, Thomas was injured by a fall of slate in the Coal Buff Mine – the incident is documented here: http://patheoldminer.rootsweb.ancestry.com/wascoalbluff1.html Fortunately, Thomas survived the accident.

Thomas married Hannah Rogers on 30 September 1907 at 2628 Linwood Ave. in Allegheny City, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania (Allegheny City has since been annexed by the City of Pittsburgh). In 1910, Thomas was working as a coal miner, and the young couple was living in a rented home in Monongahela City with their eight month old son, Thomas Raymond Furlong.

Thomas’ WWI Draft Registration Card, completed in 1918, indicates that he and Hannah were living in Gastonville at the time, and he was a coal miner for the Pittsburgh Coal Company in Coal Bluff, Washington County. He was described as tall with a medium build, with blue eyes and dark brown hair. By 1920, he owned his own home in Union Township on Gastonville Road, and continued to live there for many years. The 1940 census shows him still working as a coal miner and living in the same house.

Hannah died in 1944 at the age of 61 of cancer, and Thomas filed for Social Security benefits about three weeks later. Thomas was hit by a truck at the age of 74 in Finleyville, and died in the Monongahela Memorial Hospital in 1953. Both are buried in James Chapel Cemetery.

Thomas left a will which names his five children.
