Joseph's father John Furman, age 35, was a farmer in Greenfield Township, Michigan, near Detroit and Dearborn. He owned $400 worth of real estate or farmland. John was born around 1815 in Germany. The members of the family were listed on two consecutive pages of the Census. They were:
