Nathan was born in Northumberland Co., PA in 1805. He was the second child of Jonathan and Sarah (Howe) Furman.
In 1825 he moved with his parents to Strattanville, Clarion Co., PA. He married Isabel Longwell who was born 6 April 1805, was the daughter of William Longwell and Rachel Walker.
They had three children: Alonzo, Clementine and William Wallace.
Enlisted as a Private in Company I, 48th Infantry Regiment Pennsylvania on 1 Oct 1861. Transferred out of Company I, 48th Infantry Regiment Pennsylvania on 28 Apr 1864. Transferred into Regiment U.S. Veteran Reserve Corps on 28 April 1864.
Burial: Centennial Cemetery Strattanville Clarion County Pennsylvania
