Biography

Roland was born in 1897 in New Jersey. His father was born in Pennsylvania^[1].

He was the son of dressmaker Eliza Butler and the grandson of Civil War veteran George Butler of the all-black 54th Massachusetts regiment.

In 1910, he is attending school in or near Newark, New Jersey.
