He was the son of
Mary and Civil War veteran James Furman of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first regiment in the United States to enlist men of color during that war.

He passed away in 1914 and is buried at Mansfield Woodhouse Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
