Biography

Nothing of John Furner's past is known. His birth date is based on his age being "28" in the 1828 Census [1]and his place of birth being a "guess" as the ship he arrived on left from was Deal which is in Kent, England [2].

John Furner was a free settler who had arrived in Hobart, Van Diemen's Land (VDL) aboard the "Heroine" on April 14, 1824. In the Census of 1828 he was living with Lucy Furner Furner and her daughter Harriet in Newcastle and, although no marriage has been found for John in either VDL or in New South Wales before 1879, both Lucy and Harriet were named as Furner [1] [3].

It is thought that Harriet ciould not John's natural daughter because he had arrived in the Colony five years before he met her mother Lucy, and Harriet was born four months after her mother's arrival.

Regardless of the possible facts, it is John who was named on Harriet's birth Registration and seven hears later. when John had her Christened in 1835, it was John who organised and registered the event. [4][5] and was christened on 23 Sep 1835 [6].

When John actually arrived in New South Wales is yet to be discovered, but his first destination was Hobart [7][2]and it is interesting to note that Lucy's ship, the "Greenock", had also stopped off at Hobart on January 22, 1828 and had still not arrived in Sydney by 22 February 1828 [8] but by the time Lucy arrived he may already have been there, and it seems that it was very soon after her arrival in Sydney, they formed a relationship. The alternative is that he arrived with Lucy aboard the "Greenock" having met in Van Diemen's Land during the month long layover

Because Harriet was Christened on 23 September 1835 it can be ascertained that John did not die until after that date, but no death record has been found for him.

Neither the Greenock, nor the Cape Packet, which are now lying at the Derwent, bring any news, having sailed the later end of August.
