John Paul Wellington Furse: Born in 1904,[1] he was an English naval officer who became a rear-admiral and was also a painter, botanical illustrator, and plant hunter1.
Son of Charles Wellington Furse and Dame Katharine Furse, he had notable relatives including Bishop Michael Bolton Furse and Lieutenant General Sir William Thomas Furse.
Furse joined the Royal Navy at age 13, served on various ships and submarines, and held positions such as assistant naval attaché and director of aircraft maintenance.
With his wife Cicely, he conducted plant hunting expeditions, collected thousands of specimens, and was awarded the Victoria Medal of Honour by the RHS.[2]
