Susan Fussell was born on 7 Apr 1832 in Pennsylvania to Dr. Bartholomew Fussell and Lydia Morris
Susan, a life long teacher, started teaching in public school at the age of 15.
According to the 15 Aug 1850 census she was 18 and living with her family in Kennett Township, Pennsylvania.[1]

In 1861 she moved to Indiana to be a companion to her brother's family when her brother Captain Joshua Longstreth Fussell volunteered in the Indiana 34th Infantry. Soon there was a call for more nurses and Susan headed south in 1863 with the Indiana Sanitary Committee to be a nurse in Memphis, Tennessee. She was there for several months before going to Louisville, Kentucky until May 1865.
After the war Susan founded the Knightstown Soldier's Children's Home in Knightstown, Indiana to care for and educate children of Civil War Veterans. Her sister Lydia Fussell came to Indiana to help her.
As the 1880 census shows, Susan left the Knightstown Soldier's Children's Home and moved to Spiceland, Indiana taking some of the children with her to start her own home for orphans.[2]
Susan died 19 Jul 1889 in Spiceland, Indiana and was interred at the Friends Cemetery in Madison County, Indiana.
