Biography

Mary Anne, daughter of George and Maria Futter, was baptised at North Elmham on 7 March 1841.[1] Her birth was registered in the Mitford and Launditch district in the first quarter of that year; her mother's maiden name was Prior.[2]

At the 1851 census she was a visitor in the household of Thomas and Mary Ann Howell; next door were her parents (George 38 from Walsingham and Maria 35 from Foulsham) and four brothers - John 8, George 6, Samuel 2, and Walter 7 months.[3]

She married Robert Spooner in the Mitford district in the first quarter of 1860.[4]

At the 1861 census they were living in North Elmham, and had a nine-year-old Walter Futter in the household; presumably her younger brother.[5]

Mary Ann seems to have never left North Elmham. At the 1871 census Robert and Mary Ann had four children in the household - Ann 10, Arthur 8, Sophia 6 and Joseph 2.[6] At the 1881 census the children were Arthur 18, Joseph 12, Alice 7, Walter 5 and Robert 3.[7]

By the time of the 1891 census Robert had died and Mary Ann was a field worker, and had Walter and Robert living with her.[8]

No record for Mary Ann has been found in the 1901 census, but no obvious death/burial record has been found either.

Research Notes

Her parents married at Foulsham in 1835, both were of that parish. The transcription on freereg has George Fuller, but the image of the parish record clearly shows it to be George Futter.[9]

Maria Prior was baptised at Bintree, about one mile from Foulsham, in 1816; her parents were John, a bricklayer, and Maria.[10]

There are several baptisms for children of John and Maria Prior at Bintree[11] and, fortunately, these clearly identify who Maria was. The first record, for William in 1806, gives her maiden name as Neal. The next two records, for Mary Ann in 1807 and James in 1812, give her as the late widow Matsell. John Prior married the widow Maria Matshell at Bintree in 1802.[12]

Maria Neale married Edmund Matsell at Foulsham in 1799, one of the witnesses was William Neale.[13] Edmund died at the age of 21 and was buried at Foulsham in 1800.[14]

Maria was most likely baptised at West Rayham in 1781, with parents William and Mary.[15] William Neal married Mary Rashbury at East Raynham in 1779; both were of West Raynham.[16]

John Prior was baptised at Foulsham in 1778, his parents were also William and Mary.[17] William Prior married Mary Burgis at Foulsham in 1771.[18]

The origins of George Futter are not clear. He consistently gave his birthplace as Walsingham in the various censuses, but the only record for the baptism of a George Futter is from St James with Pockthorpe, Norwich.
