JOHN WESLEY SMITH, fourth child of william B. Smith and Frances Elizabeth Bell Smith, was born 1861 in Tennessee. (From 1870 and 1880 Bradley County, Tn. Federal Censuses). John died July 1893 of pneumonia. He is buried in Lee cemetery, McDonald, Tn. John wesley Smith married Harriett Leona Gabbert whose nickname was "Gabby". She was born in Bradley County, Tn. and was the daughter of otis Thomas Gabbert (b. 1842; d. 1907; buried Lee Cemetery, McDonald, Tn.). John and his wife, Gabby, lived in McDonald, Tn. John was a farmer and school teacher according to his sons Albert W. and Chester H. smith. John and Gabby were members of Pine Hill Cumberland presbyterian Church. John died two months before his youngest child, Ray, was born. His eldest son, Albert, was five years old and Chester only 2i years old. Chester, in later years, remembered that his mother went to work at a resort hotel in Mineral Springs, near McDonald, and he went to work with her each day. When he grew big enough to help, he was permitted to help in the kitchen. Harriett "Gabby" married again. Chester said he was 12 years old when his mother died in 190) in childbirth. She is buried in Lee cemetery, McDonald, Tn. John's and Harriett's tombstones have been washed with wind and rain and the inscriptions are hard to read. John and Harriett Gabbert Smith had three children: 4.1. Albert wesley smith, born Sep. 16, 1888. (p. 59 - 62). 4.2. Chester Hambright Smith, Sr., born Feb. 6, 1891. (p.6) - 66). 4.). John Ray Smith, born Sep. 9, 189). (p. 67 - 70).
