Biography

Michael Gabbert, Jr. was born about 1766 in Shenandoah County, Dominion of Virginia. He was the son of Michael George Gebbert; Gabbert was an alternate surname spelling adopted by Michael & his family. Others spelled the name "Gabbard". He passed away around 1840/41 on the family farm in Scott County, Iowa Territory, USA. Iowa became a US state in 1846.[1]

Michael was a bit too young to serve legally in the Revolution, yet there is some evidence in his brothers' pension files that indicates he served. He didn't apply for a pension. After the war, about 1785, he moved to Eastern Tennessee, then part of North Carolina, with other members of the family.

About 1790 he married Elizabeth Brown in Shady Valley, Sullivan County, in the "Southwest Territory," that became the US State of Tennessee in 1796. Already living in this area were his brother George Gabbert, on Doe Creek, brother Jacob Gabbert, and brother-in-law Philip Irion. Several of their children were likely born in what became Tennessee in 1796. By 1798 Michael Gabbert, Sr. and Michael Gabbert, Jr. were both on the tax rolls of Washington County, Virginia. Michael could have been listed as early as 1795. By 1809 he had left Virginia.

Michael and Elizabeth Gabbert later settled in Cumberland County, Kentucky, USA. They are on the 1810 Census there. From there, the family moved west to Iowa Territory around 1837-1840.

Birth Date: 1766 in Shenandoah, Page County, Virginia, USA [sic=Page County was not created until 1831; this area was in Shenandoah County in 1766]
' Death Date:' About 1841 at Farm, Scott County, Iowa, USA.
Age: 74-75.

Gabbard-297 and Gabbert-41 appear to represent the same person because: They represent the same man, husband of Elizabeth Brown and father of the Gabbert families in Iowa and Middle West, USA. The family preferred spelling is GABBERT so please merge into Gabbert-41 BUT he may very-well have died in 1835 in Scott County, Illinois, and not in Iowa so note the 2 possibilities in the Biography.

The 2 profiles for Elizabeth Brown Gabbert must also be merged.

Gabbert-99 and Gabbert-41 appear to represent the same person because: Gabbert-99 was created by mistake.
