William Gabitas was born in England, and emigrated to the American colonies, arriving in Pennsylvania in 1686. He was one of the early settlers of Darby Township, Chester, Pennsylvania, founded by Quakers. He is listed as William Gabitas from East Markham in the county of Nottingham.[1]
His birth in England is uncertain. There is a Quaker marriage record for William Gabitas who married Abigail Everall on Oct 1684 in Lincolnshire, England.[2] This suggests he was born about 1660.
She emigrated with him. They had daughter Rebecca, born 9 Mar 1688 and daughter Deborah, born 5 Feb 1689, both in Delaware, Pennsylvania.[3][4]
Abigail Gabitas, wife of William, was buried on 12th day of tenth month of 1691, or 12 Dec 1691, in Pennsylvania.[5]
William Gabitas apparently then remarried. William Gabitas and Rachell Marshall indicated their intent to marry for the first time on 3 Aug 1696 in Burlington, New Jersey. This was documented in Quaker meeting records.[6] They declared their second intent on 4 Sep 1696.[7] It is inferred that they actually did marry in 1696. Note that Burlington is about 30 miles from Darby, and was also an early Quaker settlement.
