Michael Lorenz Gabriel was born 22 April 1865 in Kleinliebenthal, one of the German-speaking colonies in the region of Odessa, Ukraine, which was then part of the Russian Empire. Kleinliebenthal today is called Malodolinskoje.
Michael was the son of Anton Gabriel and Barbara Adler.
He wed around August 1887 to Marie Magdaline Lutz Gabriel (1867 - 1945). They had at least three children:
Michael Gabriel died 23 August, 1955, at Saint Joseph, Buchanan County, Missouri, USA.

To Joseph were born son Bernhard b: 26 Jun 1881, daughter Magdalena b: 10 Oct 1878 (died). Anton has been called on military service on an appeal of 1880.
Michael Gabriel arrived in New York onboard the SS Elbe on 30 July 1887. On the same ship was the Adam Lutz family, including Michael's future wife, Marie Lutz.

According to family legend, Michael and Marie married in New York almost immediately after landing. The posters offering cheap land to immigrants said they needed to be married. Michael and Marie decided to get hitched and to start a family of their own in South Dakota.
The records of their marriage in New York have not been located.
They travelled to the Brown County area in South Dakota, probably by train, arriving at Aberdeen in late 1887 or early 1888. It wasn't as nice as they expected. According to a story they told their grandchildren, they "damn near froze to death." After the birth of their first child, Nicholas, in June 1888, they decided to move south to Texas, where Michael's brothers had already bought land near Plantersville, in Grimes County,
