Sometime between July 1882 and March 1884, Axel Helstrom lived in Tower, where he married Paulina Bernsdotter Gabrielsdotter (4.1.1865-7.15-1942); in 1883, Axel was 19 and Paulina was 18. They lived for a time in Virginia, where in May 1884 they joined the Skandinaviska Evangeliska Missionförsamling (Mission Society) after Axel had “turned to God.” This was one of 48 “free church” congregations that on February 21, 1885, united to form the Swedish Evangelical Mission Covenant of America (Feb. 21. 1885 in Chicago). The Mission Covenant was organized along lines similar to its Swedish counterpart, Svenska Missionsförbundet (in Stockholm, 1878). Thus the Mission Friends (which Alex and Paulina joined in 1884) later became the First Covenant Church in Virginia.
