Newspaper Report of Disappearance
"The Gippsland Times." Gippsland Times (Vic. : 1861 - 1954) 17 June 1887: 3 (Morning.).
The "Morwell and Mirboo Gazette" relates the following case of mysterious disappearance:—On Monday last a young man named Charles Gadd, well known in this district, who resided with his parents at the Four-mile, on the Narracan Valley railway, was missed from his home. He was last seen about five o'clock in the evening, and although every search was made for him, he could not be found. As the missing man is subject to fits, it was suppposed that he had fallen in the creak, which runs close to the house. During the past week Constable Goldsworthy has made every enquiry, and dragged the creek in several places, but without success. On Sunday a large searching party was organised, all the principal residents of Moe lending their assistance.
The creek for over a quarter of a mile was closely inspected, three men remaining in the water for over two hours, but no trace of the missing man could be found. A hat was found close to the creek on Friday last, which was supposed to have belonged to Gadd, but it was not recognised by the man's father and mother. Several are of opinion that he was attacked with a fit on Monday last whilst in the scrub, and that as the night was intensely cold, he perished before assistance came to him. [3]
Charlie Gadd's body to recovered in July 1887 and an inquest was held into his death on 26 July 1887. [4]
