Biography

Horace was born on 10 February 1898 at Sheffield, Yorkshire, the son of Horace Gadd and Annie Rhodes. His date of birth was recorded in his school records and the 1939 Register.

In the 1901 census Horace was living with his parents at 592 Coleridge Rd, Attercliffe cum Darnall, Sheffield. He was then aged 3 years.

School records show Horace, born 10 Feb 1898, first attended Carbrook School, Bright St, from 18 May 1903 to 11 September 1903. His parent was named as Horace Gadd of 3/4 Clifton St. Horace then attended the Owler Lane Infants School, Grimesthorpe, exact dates unknown. From there he was transferred to the Owler Lane Junior Mixed School, attending from 22 August 1904 to 26 August 1907, and then on to the Owler Lane Secondary School, attending from 26 August 1907 to 9 February 1911, when he was excused. His parent was named as Horace Gadd of 103 Upwell Street when he began at the Junior school and as Horace Gadd of 23 Birdwell Rd when he commenced secondary school.

In 1911 the family was living at 148 Upwell St, Sheffield. Horace, aged 13, was a shop assistant for a fish and chip dealer.

Interestingly the 1911 White's Directory of Sheffield & Rotherham recorded Horace Gadd, the father, residing at 101 Don Rd and his occupation as a fried fish dealer. It is therefore likely Horace was working for his father.

In the 1919-20 White’s Directory of Sheffield a Horace Gadd was recorded as living at 307 Shirland Lane and working as a steel melter. It is assumed the entry referred to this Horace as he was a steelworker in 1939 and 1953 [refer below].

Horace Gadd married Edith Amy Ford in 1925 [Marriage Sep Qtr 1925/Sheffield 9c 1054].

This couple had one daughter.

The 1939 Register, taken on 29 September 1939, has been described as a snapshot of the civilian population of England and Wales just after the outbreak of the Second World War. The Register recorded each person's address, date of birth and occupation.

Horace and his wife Edith were then living at 303 Darnall Road, Sheffield, as were Horace's parents and sister Maisie. Horace, aged 41, was working as a steel wire temperer. Edith was aged 36. Her date of birth was recorded as 11 May 1903.

Horace was still employed as a steelworker when he and his sister were granted administration of their mother's estate in 1953.

Horace Gadd died on 16 March 1957 at Sheffield aged 59 years.

From the 1962 Index of Wills and Administrations – GADD Horace of 93 Mather Road Sheffield 9 died 16 March 1957 at the City General Hospital Sheffield 5 Administration Wakefield 21 May to Edith Amy Gadd widow. Effects £530 15s.

Edith Amy Gadd died in 1985 at Sheffield aged 81 years [Death Jan 1985/Sheffield 3 1464 – DOB 11 May 1903].
