Biography

Monongalia County was in Virginia in 1803, but when the State of West Virginia was created from land separated from Virginia, Monongalia County became part of West Virginia.

The 1810 Federal Census for West Virginia (a state which did not exist in 1810) shows a household of "Tho's Gadd" living in Monogalia County. The members of that household were described as: 1 free white male, age up to 10; 1 free white male, age 16 to 26; 1 free white male, age 26 to 44; 3 free white females, ages up to 10; and 1 free white female, age 16 to 26.
