Research Notes
Based on research, it is possible that William was born in 1859 and may have been given his father's surname but, was, in fact, an illegitimate child. This is based on the fact that no marriage could be found between a Francis Gadd and Louisa Adams (William's mother's name). She did marry a Henry Francis in June 1862, less than two years after the birth of William. Henry Francis was a widower when he married Louisa, having married Sarah Batchelor in 1855. She had died by the 1861 census. The 1861 census, William was living with his grandparents and his mother is not listed at that time. On the 1881 census, William is back to surname Gadd and is listed as a stepson.Hylton-692 05:15, 19 February 2024 (UTC)Hylton-692
