Emily was born in 1895 at Stoke upon Trent, Staffordshire, daughter of Alfred Gadd and Catherine Hughes. [1]
Sh was baptised on 16 October 1895 at Holy Trinity church, Hope, near Hanley, Stoke on Trent. Her parents were then living at 5 Bateman Place and her father Alfred was a labourer. [2]
In the 1901 census Emily and her parents were living with her paternal grandparents John and Ann Gadd at 3 Bateman Pl, Hanley. Emily was aged 5 years. [3]
Emily Gadd, born 23 October 1895, attended Etruria School (Junior Girls) from 7 April 1902 to 22 August 1904. She had previously been in the Infants Department. Her parent was named as Alfred of 180 Mill St. Emily left this school to attend Cannon Street School. [4]
Her father Alfred Gadd died in 1909 when Emily was aged 13 years. At the time of his death the family was living in Granville Sttreet, Etruria Road.
In the 1911 census Emily was living with her widowed mother and younger siblings at 23 Mill St, Etruria Road, Hanley. Aged 15, she was a spur maker at the pottery. Catherine's mother Catherine Hughes, a widow aged 68, was also living with them. [5]
Emily had a daughter named Ann Gadd born in 1914.
Emily Gadd married George Cooper in 1917 at St Matthew’s Church, Etruria, Stoke on Trent. [6]
This couple had six children including Emily Cooper born 1918, Elizabeth Mary Cooper born 1919, George E Cooper born 1923 and John Cooper born 1929.
The 1939 Register, taken on 29 September 1939, has been described as a snapshot of the civilian population of England and Wales just after the outbreak of the Second World War. The Register recorded each person's address, date of birth and occupation.
At that time George and Emily were residing at 13 Sefton Street, Stoke-On-Trent. George, born 21 March 1889, was aged 50. He was a steelworks clerk. Emily, born 11 October 1895, was aged 43. [Note her date of birth differs from that given in the School Admissions Register.] Ann Cooper, as named, was born on 30 September 1914, was aged 25. She was a potter's carter. Ann's surname was later amended to her married surname of Henshall. Emily, born 26 February 1918, was aged 21. She was a potter's cup sponger. Emily's surname was later amended to her married surname of Foxall. Elizabeth, born 8 November 1919, was aged 19. She was a potter's sorter in a warehouse. Her surname was later amended to her married surname of Heath. George, born 5 April 1923, was aged 16. He was an apprentice turner at the steel works. John, born 20 April 1029, was aged 10. The records for their two youngest children remain closed at this time [2020]. [7]
George Cooper died in 1956 aged 66 years. [8]
Emily Cooper died in 1978 aged 82 years. [9]
