Biography

Born: William Gaddy was born in 1750. He was the son of Sherwood Gaddy and Mary Bright.

Virginia Land Grants and Deeds: On September 1, 1772, William Gaddy received a Land Grant for one hundred acres along Hurricane Creek in Bedford County, Virginia.[1] By Land Grant dated March 1, 1773, William Gaddy received one hundred acres of land along Ivy Creek in Bedford County, Virginia.[2] By instrument dated May 24, 1773, Sherwood Gaddy conveyed to his son William Gaddy, in consideration of his love and affection, one hundred acres described by a metes and bounds description along the Bear Branch of Ivy Creek in Bedford County, Virginia. The Deed included a release of Mary Gaddy’s right of dower.[3]

Certificates for Impressed Supplies: William Gaddy received three certificates from Virginia for supplies impressed from him in support of the Revolutionary War.[4]

Bedford County Tax Rolls: William appears on the 1782, 1783 and 1792 Bedford County, Virginia tax rolls.[5][6][7]

Kentucky Land Grants: On January 5, 1816, William Gaddie received a Land Grant of 200 acres along the Green River in Barren County (predecessor to Hart County), Kentucky. [8] A second Land Grant issued to him on June 24, 1816 for an additional 150 acres in the same area.[9]

1819 Hart County, Kentucky Tax List: William Gaddie appears on the first tax list for Hart County, Kentucky (1819) as the owner of 830 acres near Bacon Creek.[10] Jesse and Silas Gaddie appear on the same1819 tax list in Bacon Creek.

1820 US Census: William appears on the 1820 Census living in Munfordville, Hart, Kentucky, United States (2 white males over 45, 1 white male 16-25, 1 white male under 10, one white female over 45, 1 male slave under 14 and 1 female slave under 14).[11]

Death: William passed away in 1829.

Children include:

  1. Silas Gaddie, b. April 12, 1782, d. December 18, 1854.[12]
  2. Frances (Gaddy) Terry.
  3. Jesse Gaddie, b. 1794, d. March 2, 1860.
