↑ 2.02.1 The surname van der Walt did not exist before the 1727 - As was custom in those days all over Northern Europe, there was a patronymic naming system in place. Andries being the [first] name and Gaelesz (in all it's spelling variations) being the name of the father or the child - the "z" at the end indicating son of. Van der Walt also does not refer to a forest or a wood (walt / wald / walde / wolde / woud) as genealogists and biographers mistakenly thought in the past. The name Veenewoude / Feanwâlden actually has nothing to do with wood or forest - it refers to the town that was the outcome of the administrative unification ["wouden"] of two previously separated villages on hills (terpen) in flat, peaty surroundings. [Source: http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veenwouden (seen 17-11-2013)] On arrival at the settlement at the Cape, his son Gaele Andriesz had to state where he was from, and he must have said 'van Feanwâlden' . Moreover, just outside of Veenwouden there is a very small village called Feanwâldsterwâl where many of his ancestors and siblings were born, married and died. It is quite possible that the difficult pronouncement of this name was partly the reason that it was misunderstood when registering in the Cape and the surname was morphed into 'Van der Walt'.
