From the funerary inscription on Edward Caryll's tomb (A History of the Western Division of the County of Sussex, Volume 1) : "Sir Edward Caryll of Harting, knight, youngest sone to John Caryll of Wareham, in this county, Attorney to the Dutchy of Lancaster to Queen Elizabeth. Hee married three wives, whereof the first was.... Afterwards he married Philppa Gage one of the daughters of James Gage of Bentley in the countie of Sussex Esq. By whom he had 2 sonnes, viz. Thomas and Edward and 5 daughters Philippa, Eliza, Cycely, Mary and Anne..."
