Biography

Harvey Olmstead Gage was born in LaGrange Country, Indiana on 6 September 1833 the son of Abraham and Hanah (Olmstead) Gage.

In 1850 his family was living in Sherman, Saint Joseph County, Michigan. [1]

He married Martha Comley before July 1860 when they were enumerated in the census living in Springfield Township (post office Mongoquinong). He was 26 and had $500 in goods; Martha J. was 19 and they were both born in Pennsylvania.

Their daughter Alice was born about 1861 in Indiana. They moved to Iowa before their next child, Mary was born about 1866. Two sons, Ezra (1868) and Ira (1872) completed the family.

They farmed in Hamilton County, Iowa.

Martha died in 1874 and he then married (about 1879) Elizabeth Kerns who had previously married to A. H Hendricks. They had no children together though Elizabeth may have brought some of her five children into Harvey's home. [2]

In 1900 Harvey and Elizabeth were living in Webster City; in the house hold was his step-daughter Mary Pickard and her family. Harvey, age 66, was a day laborer.[3]

Harvey died 11 January 1917 in Hamilton County, Iowa and is buried in the Graceland Cemetery in Webster County, Indiana. [4]

Research Notes

Find A Grave: Memorial #63203684 incorrectly states that Harvey is the father of Mary Gage. Mary is the daughter of A. H. Hendricks and his wife Elizabeth Kerns (Harvey's second wife) and her family name is not Gage but Hendricks.

The 1900 census indicates that Elizabeth Gage had been married for 21 years, had given birth to five children, four were still living, and she was born in Virginia. Her daughter Nettie Pickard (age 36) indicated her father was born in Illinois. [5]

Gage-3279 and Gage-2216 appear to represent the same person because: Same person. Bio in 2216 is a "data dump"; those sources need to be worked into the bio on 3279 as inline references.
