Joshua was born in 1747 in Methuen, Essex, Massachusetts Bay Colony to Matthew Gage and Deborah (Swan) Gage.[1]
He joined the Revolutionary Army very early, and was in the Battle of Bunker Hill [sic]:
"[...] After the British made their third charge up Breed's Hill in the Battle of Bunker Hill, Joshua and the rest of the Yankees having run out of powder decided not to be taken prisoners. In making his getaway, Joshua noticed his wounded comrade, Brocklebank, lying on the ground unable to move. Now Brocklebank was only six feet four and weighed over two hundred but Joshua lingered not, and even though he stood only five feet four himself, shouldered the big fellow, carried him down the hill and together they found safety behind a hay cock, while the British bullets whizzed merrily over their heads. As a fitting ending to this act of mercy and heroism we find that Joshua's son, John (the uncle of Big Bill) later married Lydia Brocklebank, the daughter of big Brocklebank and many of their descendants now live in Grand Blanc, Flint and Mundy Townships." DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joshua by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joshua:
I hear you. I have had the same issue with both Ancestry and FamilySearch. Sloppy research, secondary sources, and human error are always an issue, whatever the website.
In fact, some of Ancestry's dubious sources are the reason I went to WikiTree several years ago. Once I found out about AGBI, International Marriage, etc. I became disenchanted with Ancestry and moved to WikiTree. I use both websites, archive.org, and occasionally a solid FindAGrave.
By the way, the spans WERE broken, which is why I updated the links. I did not change your sources other than removing the "span" sections and replacing them with the SAR application annotations from Ancestry.
Joshua is my 4th great-grandfather, so when a problem with a link came up, it was flagged under my "Suggestions" tab. Apparently, the rootsweb link no longer works. I removed it from the citation, but in case it works later, I'm adding it here for easier access: https://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=rlc328&id=I1296
Would you mind if I replaced some of the Ancestry.com sources with FamilySearch? I use both sources regularly, but not everyone can afford Ancestry.
