Richard Gailey was born in 1865 in Liverpool. He was the son of Daniel Gailey and Ellen (Rigby) Gailey. He was christened on January 21st 1866 at St Catherine's Church in Edge-Hill.
By 1868 the family were in St Helens, and the next child Margaret was christened (twice!) at St Nicholas' Church in Sutton.
Margaret died in March 1870, aged 2.
By April 2nd 1871, Richard's elder sister Jane and her father were possibly staying with Ellen's parents, but the surname is slightly wrong (Garley) and her father's forename is completely wrong (John). Apart from that it's a good match! Richard's mother would have been pregnant with her next child Joseph Thomas Gailey, who was probably not Daniel's son. Maybe she had run off with another man?? Richard was with their aunt and uncle Joseph and Margaret Wainwright, who later adopted both him and Joseph Thomas, in Peckers Hill Lane. Joseph was a labourer.
Over the next ten years Ellen probably had three more illegitimate children after Joseph Thomas - Margaret Ellen in 1874 who died in infancy, Albert Edward in 1876 (who may however have been Daniel's son and legitimate) who didn't live to grow up, and William Robert in 1878, who died in infancy. It's not clear where Daniel was, or whether he was alive, but Ellen was calling herself a widow by 1881.
By April 3rd 1881, Richard and his half-brother Joseph Thomas were still living with their adoptive parents, Joseph and Margaret Wainwright, who were now in Davies Street, Widnes. Joseph was working as a fitter's labourer in the alkali works; Richard was a worker in a soap factory; and Joseph was still in school. Richard's uncle William Rigby was boarding with them, and was unemployed.
Richard's sister Jane married Harry Davenport in 1883 in Prescot district.
At some point between 1881 and 1890, Richard emigrated to Australia.
Richard married Mary Wuest on December 16th 1890 at Brisbane, in Queensland, Australia. They had three children.
In 1916, when their son Joseph enlisted to fight in the First World War, he gave his next of kin initially as his father R. Gailey, at Kangaroo Point, Brisbane; but this was crossed out and changed to Mary, at 16 John Street, Spring Hill, Brisbane. So it seems Richard and Mary may have been living separately in 1916.
Richard died on January 10th 1931. He was buried (the same day?) in Balmoral Cemetery, Morningside, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.
