Joseph Thomas Gailey was born in 1871 in Sutton, St Helens. He was the son of Ellen (Wainwright) Gailey, but the fact that his birth registration lists a blank for his mother's maiden name would normally indicate him to be illegitimate, and therefore he is probably not the son of her husband Daniel Gailey.
By April 3rd 1881, Joseph and his older half-brother Richard had been adopted by his mother's sister Margaret Wainwright and her husband Joseph, who were childless. They were living at 42 Davies Street, in Widnes. Joseph was working as a fitter's labourer at an alkali works. Both boys were still using the surname Gailey. Richard, aged 15, was working for a soap manufacturer, and Joseph Gailey was only nine and still in school. They had one boarder, Margaret's brother William Rigby, who was an unemployed general labourer.
Richard Gailey emigrated to Australia, where he got married in 1890.
By April 5th 1891, Joseph & Margaret Wainwright were living in Cholmondly Street. Joseph Wainwright was working as an alkali labourer - a terrible and dangerous job. Joseph Gailey, now 14, was working as a soap works labourer. The family still had one boarder - it was now Henry Leather, aged 50 and born in Childwall, and not known to be a relative. He was working as a copper works labourer.
Joseph married Lilly Bradburn in 1893 in Prescot district.
Margaret Wainwright died in 1895 in Prescot district, aged 58.
By March 31st 1901, Joseph and Lilly were living at 48 Church Street, Widnes. Joseph was working as an alkali labourer, and they had two children - Elsie aged 6, and baby Willie. Lilly's brother Joseph and his wife and baby daughter were living with them, and they had a visitor Ruth Leyland, who was 20 and had been born in Runcorn Cheshire.
By April 2nd 1911, Joseph and Lilly were still in Widnes, and Joseph was still working as an alkali labourer. Elsie, aged 16, wasn't in paid work.
Joseph died in 1945 in Prescot district, aged 74.
