Biography

According to his baptism record Anton was born 23 July 1894 and baptised on 28 August 1894[1] Entry says he was the son of retired soldier Ignaty Gailiunas and his wife Johanna Dulewicz and was born in Riga. His godparents were Kasimir Maczunas and Elizabeth Jakovicz

Anton was born in Riga on 23 August 1894.[2] His parents were Ignaty Gailunas [3]. and Johanna. [4]

Occupation - Sailor

He sailed on the S.S. Novgorod from Hull, England, to the Port of New York, arriving on July 18, 1915. He was listed as 5 foot 6 inches tall, with a fair complexion, brown hair, and blue eyes. The address for where he was headed was "Sailor's Home, South St., NYC". [3] See research notes.

On September 19, 1918, Anton arrived at New York, New York, on the Heredia after leaving from New York on September 9, 1918. He was listed as a Seaman, A. B. on the manifest. His seaman's card number was 3124. [5]

Between December 11, 1918, and January 26, 1919, Anton was on the crew of the Norwegian vessel S.S. Fredries [Note: best guess from the handwriting.]. This vessel arrived in New York from Nassau, Bahamas. He is listed as Finnish, from Russia, and 5'7", 146 pounds.[6]

He left Cristobal, Canal Zone, on December 4, 1919, on the S.S. Cathlamet. He arrived in the U.S. on December 14, 1919. Page 2 shows his birthplace as Riga, Russia. He was listed as a Seaman on the manifest, and listed with nationality- Russia and race/people- Lettish. His last permanent residence is listed as New York, with no nearest relative listed in the country "from whence alien came." He, along with the 4 others on the page, were referred to as "destitute seamen" on the prior page. His seaman's card number was 3124. [7]

He arrived at the port of New Orleans on 26 April 1920, on the vessel Northwestern Bridge.[2]

Family

On 26 Sep 1922, Anton married Mathilda "Mollie" Siegal in Bronx, New York.[2][8]

In 1925, Anton and Mollie lived at 2805 Bainbridge in the Bronx, New York. At this point, Anton had been in the United States for 8 years, Mollie for 15. He is listed as a jewelry engraver in the census.

By 1930, Anton & Mollie were renting an apartment at 620 Maple St. in Brooklyn, NY. They paid $42.50/month rent and had a radio. Anton worked as a jewelry engraver. [9]

620 Maple St.

When Anton filed his intent to naturalize in 1931, he had changed his name to Eddie Gail.[2]

In 1932, the couple had a daughter (still living as of 2021).

In 1942, the family lived at 2340 Voorhies Avenue, Kings, New York. Eddie worked at B. F. Hirsch, located at 304 East 45th Street in New York City. He was listed as 5 foot 8 inches tall, 155 pounds, and with blue eyes and brown hair. The form also made note of a birthmark right side under his chin[10].

In 1995, the Miami Herald newspaper celebrated his 101st birthday. They reported that he came to America to escape the Russian Revolution, then joined the merchant marine. Later, he settled in New York where he engraved over 50,000 wedding bands in 40 years.[11]

He passed away in 1997. [12]

Research Notes

  • I don't know what the seamen's card number represents, such as if it was a type of employee card or a government document. But his number was consistently "3124" on manifests where it was recorded..... usually the number was written in a random blank spot, but on the Cathlamet document, page 2, it was specified as a seaman's card.[7] It may be useful to figure out more about this card. It could also be a card number associated with the Sailors' Home in NYC that he stayed at, see below research note.
  • He may have stayed at The Fulton Ferry Hotel at 92 South St, which catered to seamen, but since Anton said he was going to a Sailor’s Home,[3] that seems to indicate a charitable hotel with services. [13] Weatherall-96 06:27, 29 September 2021 (UTC)
