An Old Mail Carrier.
Last week, in the death of Mr. John S. Gains, of near Marshville, there passed away one of the oldest pioneers in Harrison county. Mr. Gains was born in 1798, and over 70 years ago, when this country was thinly settled, and our railroads yet unheard of, he carried the U. S. mails on horseback from Clarksburg to Cumberland, Md. He was then quite a youth, and in his old days many and startling were some of the experiences he could relate of his lonely trips across the wild and almost pathless Alleghanies. For many years he has been a feeble old man, and it is said that he was the last of his family. He was born near Clarksburg and married his first wife, Polly Shahan, in Preston county.––Clarksburg Telegram.
