Jacob was born on 16 August 1846 in Kington St Michael WIL ENG. He was the son of Worthy Gainey and Sarah (Bailey) Gainey.[1][2]

The couple had 13 children: Ida Beatrice Kate Gainey, Eliza Theodosia Gainey, Amelia Emma Gainey, Reginald Arthur Hoffgard Gainey, Elsie Eveline Alice Gainey, Frank Gainey, Sarah Ann Gainey, Elizabeth R Gainey, Herbert Henry Gainey, Ellen Augusta Gainey, Mary Ellen Gainey, Ruth Gainey and Thomas Gainey.[5]
