Disambiguation

Two Sarah Gaithers are frequently confused in popular genealogies:

  • Sarah Gaither, born about 1760 daughter of Edward and granddaughter of Benjamin, never married, died in Iredell Co, North Carolina
  • Sarah Gaither, born about 1763, parents unknown, married Belt Norwood and died in Maryland

Biography

Name

Sarah Gaither[1]

1763 Birth

Birth: Rod Darby's records show Sarah, wife of Belt, was born about 1760 on Gaither's Chance in Anne Arundel Co. However, that was the birth of Sarah of Edward, who died in Iredell Co, NC.

Sarah Gaither was born about 1763 in 'Gaither's Chance', Anne Arundel, Maryland[2][3]

Sarah Gaither was born in Montgomery, Maryland, on 1765 to Edward Gaither (1713-1777) and Eleanor Whittle (1720-1786). [4]

Sarah's parentage is uncertain. Some sources show the Sarah Gaither, who married Belt Norwood 3 Oct 1784, to be Sarah Gaither, daughter of Edward. However, this cannot be, since Sarah of Edward died unmarried in Iredell Co, NC in 1792. Fredric Z. Saunders notes that Sarah Gaither of Edward wrote her will on 4 May 1792 (as Gaither) and it was probated on 24 Aug. 1792 in Iredell Co., NC. That Sarah named her mother Eleanor, her brother Nicholas and his 4 sons, Edward Burgess Gaither, Lebitious Gaither, Horatio Gaither and Walter Gaither, her nephew Samuel David Reed. The executor was her brother Eli Gaither. [5]

If Belt NORWOOD married a Sarah GAITHER on 3 Oct. 1785, she was NOT the daughter of Edward GAITHER and wife Eleanor.

Their daughter Sarah wrote her will on 4 May 1792 in Iredell Co., NC, [6] which was probated in August 1792. [7] She made bequests to her mother Eleanor GAITHER, her brother Nicholas GAITHER and his four sons Edward Burgess, Lebitious, Horatio & Walter GAITHER, and her nephew Samuel David REED. Executor was her brother Eli GAITHER.

The relationship of the Sarah Gaither who was the daughter of Edward and Eleanor but not the wife of Belt Norwood is reinforced by Edward's will[8], probated June 11th, 1777, showing Sarah to have a brother named Nicholas and a brother named Eli (among other siblings). These details align with those in Sarah Gaither's will given above.

The Sarah Gaither who was the daughter of Edward and Eleanor was clearly not married, and died in 1792. If Belt Norwood's widow Sarah was living 1814, she is another Sarah GAITHER, and NOT the daughter of Edward GAITHER and wife Eleanor. http://home.netcom.com/~fzsaund/gaither.htmlhttp://home.netcom.com/~fzsaund/gaither.html

1785 Marriage to Belt Norwood

On 3 Oct 1785 in Anne Arudel, MD, Sarah Gaither married Belt Norwood, as his second wife. [2][3]

Sarah married Belt Norwood (1759-1814) and had 8 children. [4]

Marriage 2: 03 Oct 1784, Anne Arundel Co, MD [9]

Belt Norwood was born about 1759. [2]

Belt Norwood was born abt 1750 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. [1]

He was born about 1750 in Anne Arundel County, MD, and died before 1802 in Frederick County, Maryland.[3]

Birth: Belt was older than 45 in 1800 Census, thus born earlier than 1755.

Belt Norwood was a direct descendant of John Norwood, who settled near Annapolis, MD., on a tract of 600 acres, granted to him by Cecelius Calvert, James Norwood, the father of Belt Norwood. [10]

He was the son of James Norwood b: ABT 1731 in Baltimore, Maryland and Mary Belt b: ABT 1731 [2]

He was the son of James Norwood, Sr. and Mary Belt. [11]

Belt's ancestry: Kitty Crowley, the premier Norwood researcher, is "becoming more and more convinced that Belt is the son of Samuel and Mary Mullikin Norwood and therefore brother to James, rather than being James' son." Crowley observes that the main source for James as the father of Belt has been proved very unreliable. Williams & McKinsey's History of Frederick Co. also states that Belt is son of James.

1792 Death

The Sarah Gaither who was born about 1760 (daughter of Edward and Elanor) but not the wife of Belt Norwood died 24 Aug 1792 in Iredell, North Carolina, USA.[4]

1814 Tax

Sarah, wife of Belt Norwood, was taxed in 1814 on 144 acres of Henry and Elizabeth, previously omitted by assessor. [12] Furthermore, in the 1820 Census there is an unacccounted for woman aged 45+ living with Thomas and Sarah Hilleary Norwood. [13]

1823-1839 Property Transactions of Interest

On March 10, 1823, a Sarah Norwood of Montgomery County purchased "the lots of ground known and distinguished by No [number] thirty eight and ninety two lying and being in Hyatts Town [...]" for forty dollars.[14] This record has a marginal note: "I R. Norwood Examd + Delivered R. Norwood."

On March 2, 1825, a Sarah Norwood of the District of Columbia purchased "a certain lott of ground lying and being in Hyatts Town in the County of Montgomery and State aforesaid [Maryland] and distinguished by the plot of said Town by number thirty-seven [...]" for three hundred dollars.[15] This record has a marginal note: "Exam + Deliv'd R. Norwood agent." (Sarah's DC residency in 1825 is also shown in the Frederick County Court Equity Records describing a suit by various Gaither heirs against the heirs of Belt Norwood.[16])

On April 20, 1839, a Sarah Norwood of Montgomery County sold the aforementioned lots in Hyatts town (thirty seven, thirty eight, and ninety two), along with lot ninety one, to Jeremiah Norwood, Eleanor Norwood, Sarah Ann Norwood, Ralph Norwood, Elizabeth Ann Prior Norwood, Mary Ann Norwood and Thomas Norwood for the sum on one dollar.[17]

The latter would appear to be a family transaction -- but for which branch of the Norwood family? The marginal notes for the two purchases plus the eventual sales transaction by Jeremiah (Ralph's son), etc. in 1868 [18] suggest that this property was intended for the use of Belt and Sarah's son Ralph, possibly purchased on his behalf.
