Born 1859-1861 in Edinburgh or Stirling, Scotland (records found showing both places). Mother was a domestic servant Mary Ann Gillies. 1871 he was aged 12 living at the Industrial School, Spittal Street, Stirling. Record states he was born in Stirling. He was a scholar. 1890 lived at 44 Baker Street, Stirling and was a Chinaware packer. His marriage certificate shows his name as William Russell Galashan, father David Galashan upholsterer. 1891 lived at 36 Broad Street, Stirling and was a China packer. He had an untimely death suffering from a fractured skull and lacerations to the brain after accidentally falling into a pit in an iron works in Falkirk. He died 20 hours later at the College Hospital in Falkirk. His death certificate has a correction page which is a kind of inquest report. This report shows his surname as Russell or Galashan. He left a widow and a young child and a young baby. His widow, Helen Galashan entered the poor house in Stirling on 26 February 1895. Later she lived with her children with her parents at 3 Springfield Close, Stirling. His children stopped using the surname Galashan and called themselves the surname Russell.
