In 1778 he was High Sheriff of Galway City. [1]
In 1778 he was a Major in the Gort Light Dragoons, and presided at a regiment meeting in 1782. [1]
In 1788 he was made a freeman of Limerick. [1]
James died Athlone, County Roscommon, 28 October 1793. [1][8]
James Galbraith of Cappard (from 1770-1788; lived 1735 to 1793) and Balgair, was Sheriff of Galway city 1761-1765 and as such signed a petition on 10 Nov 1761 (known as ‘The Black Petition’) from the ‘Mayor, Sheriffs, and sundry resident free burgesses and freemen of Galway’ petitioning that Catholic shopkeepers be restrained from carrying on business in the town.2 He was also High Sheriff of co. Galway 1778 and a Major in the Gort Light Dragoons. He presided at a full meeting of that regiment on 9 Mar 1782 at which it resolved that ‘the people of this country are called upon to declare that the King, Lords and Commons of Ireland are the only power competent to make laws to bind this kingdom’.3 On 13 Oct 1788 he was made a freeman of Limerick. James married Rose Power Trench, daughter of Richard Trench of Garbally and sister to Wm. Power Keatinge Trench, 1st Earl of Clancarty. They had 4 sons and 1 daughter. [1 Rose 2 Andrew 3 Richard 4 John 5 William]
Andrew married a Miss Runner from Athlone by whom he had a son and heir. This son was called James and he was High Sheriff for Co. Galway in 1778 and Major in the Gort Light Dragoons. He married in 1770 Rose daughter of Richard Trench, M.P., of Garbally, Co. Galway and a sister of William 1st Earl of Clancarty. James Galbraith died in Athlone in 1793. He had two sons Richard and John.
