City of London (historic flag)
Mary Jane (Gale) Kell was born in the City of London, England.

Mary Jane Gale was born about 1847,[1] one of six children of William Gale, a saddler, and his wife Susannah (born Simons/Simmons). Her birth was registered in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter of 1849 in Islington, London, England.[2] [3][4]

In the 1851 census, Mary (age 4) was recorded as the daughter of William Gale in Islington, Middlesex, England.[5]

She emigrated to the Colony of New South Wales with her parents and elder sister Fanny on the Daphne which arrived into Port Jackson on 16 Jan 1859.[3] The passenger manifest shows:

  • William GALE 45 Saddler / Harness maker, native of Somersetshire
  • Susannah GALE 47, native of Devonshire
  • Fanny D GALE 19, native of Middlesex
  • Mary Jane GALE 11, native of Middlesex

The Daphne Manifest shows all were members of the Church of England and able to read and write when they arrived in the Colony.

She married Joseph McDougall Kell (-1896) in St Barnabas Church in Sydney (probably St Barnabas' Anglican Church, Ultimo) by licence on 8 August 1865.

"KELL-GALE-On the 8th August, by special
license, at St Barnabas' Church, by the Rev. T.
Smith, Joseph M.D. Kell, eldest son of Mr.
Donald Kell, of Sydney, to Mary Jane, young-
est daughter of Mr William Gale, of London,
England." [6]

Joseph Kell was a law clerk for over 30 years and worked for a number of different solicitors in Sydney and elsewhere in the Colony of New South Wales. About 1884, the family moved to Goulburn where Joseph worked for Mr Betts, a local solicitor. By 1896, he was managing conveyancing clerk to Mr. Betts.

Children of the couple:

  • Lillian F Kell (1869-)
  • Donald T Kell (1871-1875)
  • Margaret E B Kell (187301875)
  • Ida May Kell (1875-1945)
  • Ralph Edward Hamblyn Kell (1880-1950) b. Dubbo
  • Elsie Gertrude Kell (1883-1951)
  • Donald George Kell (1887-1931) b. Leichhardt

Joseph died on Saturday 15 Aug 1896 at their home in Goulburn.[7][8]

Mary died in Goulburn Hospital in early July 1904 from heart failure. She was 57 years old.[1]
