Biography

as one works backwards from America to Ireland name changes can be discovered. Though the family name is listed as Galen it is found that in Ireland it was Gallen. Hugh Galen b. 1780 was spelled Gallen on his son's Charles (b. 1826) death certificate. Also found Gallen spelling on Charles Galen's personal papers from 1866, financial accounting.

• In 1896 letter from Hugh Galen (b.1826) to his daughter he states that about 1840 when his father (Hugh Galen b. 1780) left for America (though we find he went to Canada before making it to America), it was about 2 years later his brother Charles Galen (b. 1826) left Ireland and his "...mother took sister went to keep house for her brother my uncle who was a widdower, but they having no use for me as I was not brought up to work and he having children of his own there was nothing left for me to do but to work for anyone might employ me..." So I list unknown sister here.
