Biography

RAYMOND MELBOURNE GALLAGHER Peacefully on August 5, 2000 at the Victoria General Hospital Mel passed away. He will be sadly missed by his loved wife Helen of 59 years and his three caring daughters, Catherine Mitchell (Jim), Marjie Joss (Gary Tougher), Ruth Lindquist (Rod) grandchildren, Greg Mitchell (Crystal), Doug and David Mitchell, Marnie and Melanie Joss (Randy Renwick), Riley and Raechelle Lindquist; great-grandchildren, Bryden and Michelle Mitchell, Breah and Sydney Renwick; sisters, Blanche Wright, Ruth Barr (Neil) and many friends. Mel was born in Winnipeg on April 4, 1911 and was raised in Winnipeg. He married Helen (Matheson) in 1941. She was the love of his life. His family was his source of pride and joy, especially his three daughters. In his eyes there was not anyone or anything more special than his family. He spent many enjoyable years as a miner and had numerous interesting stories to share with everyone. He also enjoyed his hobby of upholstering which he has passed on to his grandson David. He loved the people he met through this hobby. He was an avid member of Regents Park United Church. He greatly enjoyed the singing and the comraderie of the choir. He got so much enjoyment from all his friends, particularly Len and Bill. He loved people and was always eager to strike up a conversation with anyone. As well as the many friends in the community and Meadowood Manor, he had wonderful friendships at Regents Park. One of the strengths of his character was his determination, which was with him right until the end. A heart felt thank you to Linda Bull and all the caring staff on the fifth floor at Victoria General Hospital as well as the staff at Meadowood Manor. A memorial service will be held at Regents Park United Church on Wednesday, August 9 at 1:00 p.m. Flowers gratefully declined. Donations may be made in Mels memory to Regents Park United Church Foundation, 613 St. Marys Road, R2M 3L8.
