Biography
Frederick was born in Massachusetts, about 1844. His parents, James and Elizabeth Galletly, were both born in Scotland, as were their three eldest children. Frederick was the second child born in the United States. The family lived in Somerville, Massachusetts, by at least 1850.[1] By 1860, when he was 16 years old, he was an apprentice brush maker, as was his brother James, age 17.[2]
He was 18 years old when he enlisted to serve in the Civil War. He mustered into Co. A of the 23rd Mass. Infantry on December 4, 1861. He re-enlisted in December of 1863. He was killed by a gunshot wound during the Siege of Petersburg, Virginia, on August 5, 1864.[3] He is buried at the Poplar Grove National Cemetery in Virginia.[4] His brother James also served in the war, with the 31st Mass. Infantry.
His name is inscribed on the Civil War Soldiers Monument at the Milk Row Cemetery in Somerville, dedicated to residents who died during their Civil War service.[5]
