Revised June 3, 2017

George Aussem Galloway was born in 1812 in Ernestown, Lexington & Addington County, Upper Canada. Ernestown, now the town of Bath in Ernestown Township, is located in east Ontario, east of the city of Kingston and west of the border with New York State, on the north shore of Lake Ontario.

Note: Upper Canada (1791-1841) was part of present day Ontario, generally that portion close to the Great Lakes. Canada West (1841-1867) was the western portion of the current Canadian province of Ontario. Canada did not become a single confederation, with the separately named provinces that we know today, until 1867.

George Aussem Galloway was the youngest of three children born to Henry Galloway (1785-1870) & Phoebe Clark (1785-1813). George’s mother died when he was still an infant. George had two older sisters, Catherine (born 1808) and Mary Elizabeth (born 1810). George also had an unknown number of younger siblings from his father’s second marriage to a woman named Magdalen Bodrevil. Three known children were Joseph (born 1829), Rachel (born after 1829), and Charles Wesley (born 1837). George’s middle name, Aussem, was in honor of his paternal grandmother, Catherine Olive Aussem who, in turn, was the daughter of German immigrant John Henry Aussem (Johannes Heinrich Aussem).

The extended Galloway family once resided in New York State. Family patriarch John Galloway, George’s great-grandfather, was an immigrant from Scotland in the early 18th century. He originally settled in New York City but sometime around 1750 moved his family to Orange County, New York, about 50 miles north of the city. George’s grandfather, George Galloway (1748-1813), was the youngest of ten children born to John Galloway. He married Catherine Olive Aussem, who was the daughter of Dr. John Henry Aussem. Dr. Aussem was a loyalist, and at the conclusion of the War of the Revolution the Aussem family was forced out of New York and settled in the Kingston, Ontario area (Upper Canada). George Galloway, although he at first served in the New York militia during the war, switched to the loyalist side and at the conclusion of the war moved to Canada with his wife and children, and the rest of the Aussem family. All but one of George Galloway’s brothers and sisters, however, remained in New York. On December 22, 1837, in Whitby, Upper Canada (now Ontario; Whitby is east of Toronto on the north shore of Lake Ontario), George Aussem Galloway, age 25, of Whitby, married Elizabeth Ames, age 23, also of Whitby. Witnesses at the wedding were Daniel Cumstock and Lucy Ann Ames (Elizabeth's sister). Earlier that month, on December 4th, George and Elizabeth had been witnesses at the marriage of George's cousin, Jane Galloway, of Whitby, to Appleton Jones, of Pickering. Both marriages were conducted by the Reverend Marsh. (Source: Marriage Register of Upper Canada & Canada West - Home District 1835-1843.)

Elizabeth Ames was born on February 2, 1814, in Orford, Grafton County, New Hampshire. She was the eldest of eight children born to Phineas Ames (1790-1878) & Hannah Learned (1793-1865). Elizabeth's siblings were Phoebe, Lucy Ann, George, Hannah, Rosella, Mary and Edward. According to census records, her parents were also born in New Hampshire, but that’s all that can be determined. (As an aside, the Ames Society, a genealogical organization devoted to the Ames family ancestry, has no record of a Phineas Ames that fits the above profile. This calls into question whether the family name was actually "Ames", or perhaps some other close spelling such as "Aimes" or "Eames". Unfortunately, no evidence can be found one way or another.) Phineas Ames and his family emigrated from New Hampshire to Canada sometime between 1834 and 1837, and it was in Canada where Elizabeth met George Aussem Galloway.

George Aussem Galloway & Elizabeth Ames had twelve children. Their first six children were all daughters and were all born in Upper Canada or Canada West. They were Hannah Minerva (1837), Marilla Abigail (1840), Lovina M. (1843), Lucy Ann (1845), Elizabeth Marilla “Mary” (1847), and Phoebe Jane (1848).

In early 1850, the Galloway family emigrated to the United States, settling on a farm near the town of Trenton, Dodge County, Wisconsin (in southeast Wisconsin, about 50 miles northwest of Milwaukee). The 1850 census, taken on August 24th, lists George Galloway, age 37, a farmer with real estate valued at $300, wife Elizabeth, age 37, and daughters Hannah M., age 11, Abigail M., age 9, Lovina M., age 7, Lucy A., age 5, Elizabeth M., age 3, and Phebe J., age 1.

After settling in Wisconsin, George and Elizabeth would have six more children, interestingly all boys. They were Henry P. (1851), Edward G. (1852), Oliver Madison (1854), Herbert Wellington (1856), Willard Carlton (1858), and Frederick A. (1860).

On the 1860 census, the Galloway family continued to live near Trenton, Wisconsin. "G.A." (George Aussem) Galloway is listed as age 45, a farmer, with real estate valued at $3,200 and personal property valued at $800. Wife Elizabeth is listed at age 44, suggesting she was born in 1816, but this conflicts with earlier census records that show her as being born in February 1813, and her gravestone which gives a specific date of February 2, 1814. Two farm laborers, George Cole, age 25, and Jessie Wing, age 22, both natives of New York State, lived with the Galloway household.

By 1870, the family had moved to Bradford Township in Chickasaw County, Iowa. The local post office was listed as Nashua. The value of the family farm was listed at $5,000 and the value of personal property at $1,000. All the boys were still living at home as were daughters Marilla, age 30, and Phoebe Jane, age 21. The other daughters had all married and moved away or at least were living elsewhere.

Additionally in 1870, one laborer, Joseph Gardiner, age 23 and a native of New York State, lived in the family household. Gardiner had a farm of his own with a value of $3,000 and personal property of $400. The presence of live-in workers originally from New York State, both in 1860 and 1870, suggests a connection with the portion of the extended Galloway family that remained in New York State after the War of the Revolution, but this is pure speculation.

By the 1880 census, the children had all reached maturity and most had married. George and Elizabeth, then ages 68 and 67, respectively, were living on a farm in Logan Township, Barton County, Kansas, with their youngest sons Herbert, Willard and Frederick. The sons were all listed as farm laborers.

George Aussem Galloway died at age 81 on April 26, 1894, in Larned, Pawnee County, Kansas. He was buried in plot SC-454 of the Larned Cemetery. Following George's death, Elizabeth Ames Galloway moved to Burrton Township, Harvey County, Kansas, to live with her youngest son, Frederick on his farm. Elizabeth is listed as such on the 1895 Kansas census, and on the 1900 national census where she is shown as age 87.

Elizabeth Ames Galloway died at age 94 on March 16, 1908, in the town of Larned in Pawnee County, Kansas. Her brief obituary, published in the 'Tiller & Toiler' of Larned, Kansas, on March 20, 1908, read as follows:

Sudden Death at 94 Years of Age

Mrs. Galloway, who has been living with her daughter, Mrs. Hutchins, on the Nickols farm about five miles southwest of Larned, died very suddenly Monday of this week. She had been up and around with the family all day Sunday, and appeared to be in her usual good health. She was 94 years old. Funeral services were conducted from the home Thursday morning at 10 o'clock, Rev. W. B. Barton of the Larned Methodist church officiating, and internment in the Larned cemetery.

Another obituary, published in the 'Larned Chronoscope' on March 19, 1908, read as follows:

Death of Mrs. E. Galloway

Mrs. Elizabeth Galloway died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. M. H. (Hannah Minerva Galloway) Hutchins, Monday night at the age of 94. The funeral was held at the house this morning, and Rev. Barton conducted the service.

Mrs. Galloway was born in New Hampshire and was the mother of twelve children, six boys and six girls. Five were present at the funeral, Mrs. (Harvey) Hutchins and H. (Herbert) W. Galloway of this county, H. (Henry) P. Galloway of Turon, Fred Galloway of Clatlin, and Mrs. (Mary Galloway) Dalziel of Great Bend.

A third obituary, published in the ‘Barton County Democrat’ on March 20, 1908, read as follows: Elizabeth Galloway

Mrs. Elizabeth Galloway was born in the state of New Hampshire her maiden name being Elizabeth Ames, and died at Larned, Kansas, March 16th, 1908, aged 95 years. She was married to George A. Galloway in New Hampshire and the moved to Canada, then to Wisconsin, then to Iowa, and in 1874 to Barton County, Kansas. Her husband, George A. Galloway, died in this county in 1894. To this union were born twelve children, six boys and six girls, ten of whom are living. Mrs. Galloway lived in this county near Claflin since 1874, except the last two or three years, and is well known to nearly everyone in and around Claflin. She leaves ten children and a large number of friends and neighbors to mourn her loss. The children living are Henry of Sterling, Edward of Aspen, Colorado, Oliver of Forrest Grove, Oregon, Herbert of Larned, Kansas, W. (Willard) C. of Garnett, Fred of Claflin, Mrs. W. H. Hutchins (Hannah), Larned, Kansas, Mrs. Lucy McKennin (MacKinnon) of Kansas City, Kansas, Mrs. J. S. Dalziel (Mary) of Great Bend, Kansas, and Mrs. Jane Stubbins of North Dakota. Funeral service will be held at Larned, Kansas, March 19th at 10:30 A.M. We with a host of friends of the family extend our sympathy in their sad hour of trial.

Elizabeth Ames Galloway is buried in plot SC-454 of the Larned Cemetery. She and her husband, George Aussem Galloway, are buried side by side and share a common headstone.

Also buried in the Larned town cemetery are Hannah Minerva Galloway Hutchins (1837-1920), George & Elizabeth's eldest child, [Harvey Hutchins, Hannah's husband, is buried elsewhere], Herbert Wellington Galloway (1856-1928), George & Elizabeth's 10th child, Emma Giles Galloway (1858-1942), Herbert's wife, and Ora Louise Galloway (1886-1968), Herbert & Emma's daughter.

The lives of the children of George Aussem Galloway & Elizabeth Ames are summarized as follows:

• Hannah Minerva Galloway (1837-1920) married, in 1860, W. Harvey Hutchins (1836-before 1905) in Wisconsin in 1860. Minerva (Hannah went by her middle name) had moved with her family from Canada to Wisconsin in about 1860. With Harvey, who was a farmer, Minerva gave birth to two boys. After marrying Harvey Hutchins, Minerva lived in Minnesota, Iowa, and finally Kansas City, Missouri. No record can be found of precisely when Harvey Hutchins died or where he was buried. Hannah was buried in the Larned Cemetery in Larned, Pawnee County, Kansas.

• Marilla Abigail Galloway (1840-1877) married, in 1874, Benjamin Hamilton Kelley II (1844-1898). Hamilton (Benjamin went by his middle name) & Marilla had two children, Benjamin Hamilton Kelley Jr. and Marilla E. Kelley. Marilla died after the birth of her daughter (Hamilton was listed as a widower on the 1880 census), probably in 1877 from complications of childbirth. Hamilton never remarried. He died in 1898 in Walla Walla, Washington. It is not known where Marilla was buried. Her husband, Benjamin, was buried in the Mountain View Cemetery in Walla Walla, Walla Walla County, Washington.

• Lovina M. Galloway (1843-1888) married, in 1864, Charles Rogers (1838-1920) and lived most of her life in Wisconsin and Minnesota. With Charles, Lovina gave birth to three children, Frank, Mary and Scott. After Lovina’s death, Charles, who never remarried, moved to Oregon where he lived out his life. It is not known where Lovina or Charles were buried.

• Lucy Ann Galloway (1844-1924) married, in 1871, Colin MacKinnon (1840-1916) and lived most of her adult life in Kansas City, Missouri. With Colin, Lucy gave birth to four boys; George, Herbert, Colin Jr., and Paul. Lucy & Colin were buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Kansas City, Kansas.

• Elizabeth Marilla “Mary” Galloway (1847-1925) married, in 1868, James S. Dalziel (1842-1921) and lived most of her adult life in Great Bend, Kansas. With James Dalziel, Mary gave birth to four children; Agnes, Leon, Cecil and Lucy. James Dalziel, who in 1843 immigrated from England as an infant with his parents, made his living as a furniture dealer. Mary & James were buried in the Great Bend Cemetery in Great Bend, Barton County, Kansas.

• Phoebe Jane Galloway (1848-1937) married, in 1871, George Edmund Stubbins (1848-1933) and lived most of her adult life first in Iowa and then North Dakota. George Edmund Stubbins was an immigrant, as a small boy, from England. He was a banker and real estate developer, and among his many accomplishments he was the first mayor of Britt, Iowa, and, with his sons, the principal founder of Granville, North Dakota. With her husband George, Jane (Phoebe referred to herself by her middle name) gave birth to four boys; Clayton, Eugene, Arthur, and George. Phoebe & George were buried in the Granville Cemetery in Granville, McHenry County, North Dakota.

• Henry P. Galloway (1850-1919) married twice, first in about 1879, to Jennett “Jenny” S. Tannahill (1853-1883), and second in 1885 to Oneita “Nina” P. Gould (1866-1956). Henry was a farmer and lived most of his life in Barton County, Kansas. He fathered three children with first wife Jenny, although two died as infants and Jenny died about the same time as her youngest child suggesting complications from childbirth, and two children with second wife Nina. Henry & Jenny were buried in the Great Bend Cemetery in Great Bend, Barton County, Kansas.

• Edward G. Galloway (1852-1910) married, in 1875, Ella Maria Norton (1855-1943) and lived much of his life as a farmer in Saline County, Kansas. With Ella, Edward, or “Ed” as he was referred to, fathered three children, two boys and one girl. Sometime after 1900 the family moved to Grand Valley, Colorado, where Ed died in 1910. According to his obituary, Ed was kicked in the stomach by a horse (or a mule). The kick caused a perforation in his colon which led to peritonitis which killed him in a few days. Ella lived another 33 years, dying in 1943 in Aspen, Colorado. Edward & Ella were buried in the Red Butte Cemetery in Aspen, Pitkin County, Colorado.

• Oliver Madison Galloway (1854-1941) led a very unusual life, having been married to two women of 35 years age difference. He first married, at age 22 in 1876 in Saline County, Kansas, Ruth Maria Bennett (1829-1915) a divorcee almost 25 years his senior with three living children who were almost as old as Oliver himself. Ruth had divorced her first husband, Amos Dickerman (1829-1914), in 1875. Ruth had been born in Grafton County, New Hampshire, the same county where Oliver’s mother had grown up. Whether this was a simple coincidence or indicative of some other connection is not known. Oliver’s marriage to Ruth Bennett produced no children and in 1885 they divorced, whereupon Ruth remarried her first husband, Amos Dickerman. At some point after his divorce from Ruth, Oliver moved to Oregon where, in 1897, he married the widow May Purdin Richardson (1864-1941), a woman 10 years his junior and with three young children from her first marriage to Lewis Clark Richardson (1857-1894). With May, Oliver fathered two children, a boy and a girl. In 1903, Oliver and May divorced, but remarried in 1905 and lived out their lives in Washington City, Oregon. Oliver lived most of his life as a farmer and, late in life, a gardener. It is not known where Oliver or May were buried.

• Herbert Wellington Galloway (1856-1928) married, in 1883, Emma Giles (1858-1942) and lived most of his life as a farmer in Barton County, and later Pawnee County, Kansas. With Emma, Herbert fathered two girls. Herbert & Emma were buried in the Larned Cemetery in Larned, Pawnee County, Kansas.

• Willard Carlton Galloway (1858-1923) married, in 1893, Roselia “Rose” Sayre (1861-1920) and lived most of his life as a farmer in Miami County and Wyandotte County, Kansas. With Rose, Willard fathered two boys. Willard & Rose were buried in the Garnett Cemetery in Garnett, Anderson County, Kansas.

• Frederick A. Galloway (1860-1941) married twice, first, in 1889, to Alice Lattice Shannon (1867-1891), and second, in 1897, to Anna “Annie” Shannon Bitner (1867-1931), and lived most of his life in Burrton County, Kansas. With first wife Alice, Fred (as he was known) fathered one son, who only lived a few months. His wife Alice died shortly thereafter, which must have been quite devastating for Fred. With second wife Annie, Frederick fathered seven children, four girls and three boys. Even though the name “Shannon” appears in both his wives’ names, it does not appear they were in any way related. Fred was a farmer all his life. Frederick and his second wife, Annie, were buried in the Burrton Cemetery in Burrton, Harvey County, Kansas. It is not known where Frederick’s first wife, Alice, was buried.
